ChThe Mack McGill Interview

Second Lieutenant William Weir ‘Mack’ McGill was a pharmacist by profession.  He came from the London, Ontario area.  Mack was taken on strength with the Royal Flying Corp’s Headquarters Training Brigade in England (exact date unknown). On the 14th of February, 1918., he was posted to No. 1 Fighting School at Turnberry, Ayershire.  This is where he would have flown aircraft mentioned in the interview including the Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Camel and SopwithDolphin.

On the 28th of June, 1918 Mack was posted to the British Expeditionary Force in France.  He is known to have been with No. 23 Squadron as of November, 1918.  If he indeed did go directly to No. 23 Squadron upon arrival in France, he would have joined the squadron at Bertangles.  The squadron equipped with the Sopwith Dolphin, was under the command of Major C. E. Bryant D.S.O.  He would remain in command until December 1919 when he was replaced by a Canadian, Squadron Leader Raymond Collishaw D.S.O. O.B.E. D.S.C. D.F.C.  Squadron movements from the end of June 1918 onwards were:

Bertangles, France until the 13th of September 1918             Cappy, France until the 11th of October 1918

Hancourt, France until the 25th of October 1918                  Bertry East, France until the 3rd of December 1918

Clermont, France until the 15th of March 1919      Waddington, Lincolnshire, England until disbandment on the 31st of December 1919

McGill was posted to No. 3 Training Depot Station at Lepcombe Corner, Wiltshire on the 2nd of April 1919.
